Beginning Journal Entries

Elizabeth Wakefield

I hate surprises. Always have. I mean, I understand the concept and how some people might think surprises are good things. But let's just take a look back at three major events in my life-all surprises-and see how they turned out.

1. Last year Todd came back to Sweet Valley from Vermont out of nowehere. Big surprise. I end up getting back together with him and breaking someone's heart, and Todd and I self=destructed anyway.
2. Last year again, Jessica and my seventeenth birthday. Our friends throw us a surprise party. Another big surprise-followed by a catastophic earthquake, my house being destroyed, one of my best friends dying, and my boyfriend skipping town.
3. Beginning of this year, I'm invited to stay at Megan Sandborn's house. I come out of my bedroom in the morning and find Conner McDermott in my bathroom. BIG surprise. And we all know how that worked out.

So you can see, surprises aren't my thing. At least they haven't been...until now. Now that I've found out who my secret admirer is, well, let's just say surprises have an upside.

Melissa Fox

I hate surprises.
Wanna know the worst kind?
Walking in on your boyfriend kissing the number-one person on your "Top Ten People I Loathe the most" list.

Andy Marsden

I've always loved surprises. When I was little, my parents were all over surprising me. They surprised me with a trip to Disneyland. They surprised me with a ten-speed bike. My little brother, Mike, was surprise-even to my parets. (I like to think that he was actually a MISTAKE, but that's a topic for another time.) But it seems like as you get older, while there are still some kick-butt surprises, there are more surprises that are not of the good kind. For example, surprising your parents with the news that you're gay is not generally a cause for jaw-dropping, jump-up-and-down enthusiasm. It ws not fun, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. That's why I wish Dave wasn't going through it now

Dave Niles

I like surprises. Wanna know what kind of surprises I like? I like jack-in-the-boxes, I like playing peek-a-boo with my little cousins, I like it when one of my friends dyes her hair and doesn't tell anyone before walking into school with what looks like a cotton-candy wig teh next morning. I like when I buy candy from a vending machine and it pops out an extra snickers. All good things. What I don't like is the surprise I have to give my dad.
And I'm not looking forward to the heart attack it might cause either.

Tia Ramirez

Surprises are what make life interesting. Everyone around me always needs a plan for everything. And that's fine. Plans are good. I'm down with plans. But if you're the type of person who goes all flipped when something happens to alter those plans-you know, the kind of person who can't even take a step back and decide whether or not this surprise is a good thing before they lose it-then you're never going to be able to live your life. It's all about the unexpected. That's why I don't have a plan yet. And I don't plan to have a plan anytime soon.
Bring on the surprises.

Body

Chapter one - He Shoots He Scores (announcer)

We start off with Elizabeth at First and Ten, where we left off in the last book. She is standing in the crowd, and looking at the guy who called her name. She can't believe it, but it's Jeffrey French. She's in shock while Jeffrey is talking to her. She's thinking how he looks better than he did the last year. He goes by 'Jeff' now. She starts talking to him.

Will is kissing Erika, and thinking "What am I doing?" He doesn't know yet that Melissa is standing at the doorway. They break apart from kissing and Erika goes to close the door..they both turn around and they see Melissa standing there. Melissa turns and walks out of the room, out of the building. But not before throwing away Will's gift. Erika leaves Will in the room, saying she has work to do. Will is standing there feeling like a jerk.

Andy and Dave are down in Andy's basement playing pool. They start talking about how Dave is going to tell his father about him being gay. Andy's mom comes down with brownies..little more talking. Dave decides he'll tell his father tomorrow at dinner.

Tia and Trent are at Cresent Beach talking and making out. Later back at her house, Trent makes a comment about them leaving school in August. Tia has pretty much a panic attack thinking about the future and her not having any plans set.

Chapter two - Enjoy the Moment (Elizabeth)

Liz and Jeff are just leaving HOJ. They are driving back to her house in his convertable and talking. She is thinking about why she ever broke up with him in the first place. Jeff DJs at the Riot for the past few months. Liz can't hardly believe it. He is now into surfing and snowboarding. Liz is intrigued. They get to her house and Liz pulls him close for a kiss and they kiss.

It's now Friday morning and Tia is sitting in her homeroom. Mr. Collins is passing out Career Aptitude Tests. Tia is excited about the test..it's exactly what she needed. Although as the questions go on, she starts feeling skeptical about her future again. The questions just keep getting crazier!

It's toward the end of the day and Liz is spacing out in her Creative Writing class. She walks out of class and finds Jeff standing there in the hall. She goes to him. Conner walks out of the classroom and sees them and practically freezes. Conner goes over to her and asks if she has the homework..because he's been spaced out in class. Liz said no and that she was spaced out too. Conner says he'll just get the homework from Andy. Liz notices that Conner is jealous and she is enjoying the feeling very much. Jeff asks Liz what she saw in Conner..she doesn't answer..too busy enjoying the fact that Conner is jealous. Liz has to work after school but Jessica has the Jeep. So Jeff offers to drive her and pick her up after work so they can go out. Liz is happy.

Tia, Jessica, Maria and Ken are walking up to the guidance counselors office to pick up the results to their Career Aptitude tess. Tia is ranting on about the whole test and how crazy the questions were. Jessica's results were fashion consultant, photographer and actress. Maria got actress, motivational speaker and professor. Ken got coach/teacher, environmental engineer and financial assistant. Tia got bartender/waitress, botanist, and philanthropist. Tia isn't too happy.

In the journal at the end of this chapter, we find Liz's results..journalist, novelist and librarian. She isn't happy about the librarian part and believes that these testing people obviously has issues.

Chapter three - Good Luck Charm (Liz talking about Jeff)

Liz is at the Scope spacing at her desk. Leo..her supervisor comes over. Liz did something embarrassing, due to her lack of concentration. Jeff walks in..he introduces himself to Leo and he and Liz leave. On their way out, another writer comes up to them saying he can't cover the Forum tour..a huge music/extreme sports/arts festival. He gives the tickets to Liz who in turn invites Jeff to come along with her.

It's Friday night and Dave is watching tv waiting for his father to come home. His father comes home and Dave is preparing to tell him..although his father has news and tells it first. Dave's mom is coming to town and wants to see Dave. Dave is happy..his father is a little nervous telling his ex-wife about Ellen, Evan's mom. Dave decides this isn't the best time to tell his dad about himself..so decides for a later time.

Andy comes over to Dave's house that night and Dave tells him about his mom coming to town. Which means he did not tell his father yet about himself..Andy is a bit dissappointed and the two go out.

Tia is at HOJ talking to Jessica and Jeremy. She is complaining about how everyone has a thing...something that they are good at and she has nothing. She then decides to do the jobs that were listed on her test results to see if they are actually for her.

At the end of this chapter is a journal/test results for Melissa..she got psychologist, fashion designer, and politician.

Chapter four - The Coming-Out Subject (Andy)

Andy and Dave are at HOJ talking about how Dave couldn't tell his father yet.

Later that night, Tia is at the Riot, working for one night as a bartender to see how she likes it. She can tend bar, but can't serve alcohol. Conner, Alanna, and Andy are her first costumers. Dave bailed a while back so it's just Andy. Conner and Alanna leave and Tia is talking with Andy telling him to ask himself if Dave is worth it. Andy says yes and leaves. Liz and Jeff are having ice cream and talking. Liz is pretty much playing it safe right now..not saying what is on her mind and agreeing to everything Jeff is saying

Tia is having a hell of a time bartending and is pretty much told to leave by Rick..the supervisor.

The journal at the end of this chapter is Andy's test results: comedian, cruise director, doctor/nurse/medical professional

Chapter five - Give Up (Melissa)

Saturday and Melissa is out by her pool with Lila and Cherie. Will has been pestering her all week and she's been avoiding him. Will comes over but won't go out by the pool..Cherie goes and tells him that Melissa doesn't want to see him. She also has not told her friends what happened. Tia's next adventure is botony...she calls Ken since his part time job is landscaping and joins him for a day. They actually have to work in the Wakefields yard today. It turns into a disaster and she leaves.

Liz is leaving the mall. She went to buy some cds of bands that are to be at the forum so she can hear them first before seeing them play. She runs into Megan and Todd. They talk and ask Liz who she is taking to the forum. She says Jeff. Todd's reaction is funny..he gets a little jealous and Liz is enjoying the moment again. She feels she would have done this sooner if she had known it would feel that good. Oh, and Andy calls Dave to see what is going on with him and Dave lies that he told his father so Andy will be happy.

Chapter six - No Self Respecting Girl (Tia)

We read about Tia's disasterous morning pulling weeds! She goes home. Liz, Maria and Jess are out by the pool. They are lecturing Liz about not taking the backseat to this relationship with Jeff. That she has to be herself and quit agreeing to everything Jeff says.

Andy, Dave, Evan and Jade are all eating at this restaurant at the beach and talking about the forum...EVan and Jade have tickets, and Dave's mom coming back into town. Tia goes over to Trent's house for dinner. By the way, Trent and Jeremy are still on non-speaking terms. Well, Tia gets there and Trent has a surprise for her..his cousin Haley is a philanthropist and can help Tia with her third career option. Tia isn't that thrilled but goes along with it.

The end of this chapter has Conner's test results: musician, author/poet, librarian...and yeah, he isn't too happy with the librarian part either.

Chapter seven - An Answer, however Small (Tia)

It's Sunday and Tia is helping out with the homeless. Hayley also tells her about the Habitat for Humanity where they build homes for the homeless. Tia likes the idea and thinks about looking into it later. Andy calls up Dave but he isn't home and talks to his dad and finds out that Dave never said anything to his father. Andy never let Dave's father know either. Liz and Jeff are at the forum..later go on one of those virtual rides. Liz sometimes gets motion sickness, so this wasn't a good idea. She throws up after the ride. Jeffrey takes her home and tells him to go back to the forum to see the few bands he wanted to see. At the beach, Will is playing vollyball with his friends. He sees Melissa and Gina and goes to talk to her. She refuses. Will is starting to get fed up with all that's going on.

The end of this chapter is Will's test results: television news announcer, coach/teacher, police officer

Chapter eight - A Little Off (Dave)

Dave comes home and his dad is wondering about Andy...Dave lies to him. He goes to Andy's house and Andy accuses him of lying to him. This chapter is where Jeff takes Liz home from the forum. Tia is at her parents' business..the Bay Street Deli..helping with inventory. Her parents think she wants a career as a social worker..and Tia is starting to think her like is one big misunderstanding after another.

Chapter nine - Out (Dave)

It's Monday and Liz is in the cafeteria. She is about to break up with Jeff 'cuz she feels it won't work. But Jeff gives her a present...all the info she needs for her article on the Forum. When he went back to the forum on Sunday, he did all her research for her. Liz realizes she can be with him without losing herself and doesn't break up with him. Tia goes back and talks to Hayley. Hayley explains to her that not everyone knows what they want to be by the time they enter college and those that do, often change their minds. That night, Dave is at home having dinner with his dad and mom. His parents start arguing...Dave can't take it anymore and gets there attention and tells them that he is gay. Tia goes home and tells her parents that she may want to hold off college for a year until she knows what she wants. They have a talk and Tia is starting to feel a lot better about things.
