Elizabeth Wakefield was dancing around her room, on Sunday night, listening to the new CD that she had brought from the mall yesterday. It had lots of funky music, joined with a hip hop melody. Elizabeth was just about to do a turn (one that she had learned in Cheerleading), when Jessica appeared at the door. “Hey Liz. Oh wow, you got that cool new CD.” Jessica announced as she also started in on a routine with her sister. Both sisters, had recently been to the Cheerleading Regionals, in which their team came third overall. And that meant they were off to Nationals to compete. The Nationals would take place in three weeks time. “Can you believe we’re in Nationals, Lizzie. It was only a few weeks ago you even joined the cheerleading squad.” Jessica announced as she flopped on her stomach on Elizabeth’s bed. “Yeah, and it feels like I’ve been doing it for ages, but it also feels good.” Elizabeth even surprised herself, when she tried out for the squad, as that was a very un-like Elizabeth thing to do. But she was getting sick of being stereotyped, and wanted to break away from the Liz mould. And at the same time she actually enjoyed cheerleading and working as part of a team. It was more difficult than it looked, especially with all the dilemmas in the SVH team. Melissa Fox was just staring at her night clock. She couldn’t believe how her parents were acting. They usually didn’t talk to her that much. But she was sure for now, that they were purposely making her life a living nightmare, especially her mother. They both knew how much cheerleading meant to her, and usually encouraged it. They even brought her a little uniform when she was younger because they thought it was cute. But now, her mother was even wanting to take that away from her. It just wasn’t fair. They knew that cheerleading was all she had. Well, maybe they didn’t know that her friends had betrayed her, her boyfriend had dumped her, her worst enemy was regaining status, oh and that their Melissa Fox, was losing face. She didn’t want to admit it to herself. “Well, they will all pay for messing with me. They will. They will.” She repeated over and over. Tia Ramirez woke early on Monday morning, thrilled to go back to SVH, especially after gaining third in the Cheerleading Regionals. People would be talking to them more than ever. And Tia was more than willing to talk, especially with those close to her. She noticed a picture on the wall, it was one of her, Jessica, Elizabeth, and Maria all close together, from when they had a girly’s night in, a while ago. Jessica was changing before everyone’s eyes. She had once been very close to Tia, and was still friendly, but things weren’t as they seemed. Tia went downstairs, and got some cereal and put it into a bowl, with some milk, and a little bit of sugar on top, as well as getting herself a glass of water, and left herself to her thoughts. Elizabeth had also changed as well as Jessica. She was more confident, nice and always willing to listen, and didn’t talk about her problems much anymore. And as for Jessica, she was raking in popularity like never before. It even showed, with the way she presented herself. Tia just wished things were back to normal. Tia finished her breakfast, went back upstairs, had a shower, packed her bag, and was about to set off, when she noticed, something weird. The whole house was quiet? Where was everyone? Tia, went back to her room, and looked at her alarm clock, which read 6am. She breathed a sigh of relief. Everyone was still in bed. Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield walked side by side through the doors of SVH, and were instantly the center of attention. Jessica was wearing a short blue skirt, with a mini white crop top, that had the words, ‘cheerleader’ written on the front, whereas Elizabeth had on white capri pants and a crinkled embroided flowery top, that complimented her well. Jessica’s hair was down, and Elizabeth had hers pulled back in a pony tail. Each girl was receiving equal attention. Their identical good looks could win a crowd over, and were doing so at the moment. Jessica just smiled as she flipped her hair back, and Elizabeth was glancing around to see if she could spot Maria anywhere. Both girls looked like they had come out of the pages of a Cleo magazine, with glossy blond hair, and perfect made up faces. Jessica saw someone she knew and raced off into the crowd, while Elizabeth was heading toward her locker to get out her school books, and head off to homeroom. “Hey Wakefield, you hottie, where are you going so quickly, tell me all about your trip to the Cheerleading Regionals.” Came this flirtatious voice behind her. Elizabeth spun around. Josh Radinsky was standing there, looking rather calm and bemused. In a very high pitch voice, not her own, Elizabeth said. “Well, we are going to the Nationals in three weeks, darling, so yay to us." Josh just stared. “Jessica is that you?” he said as an afterthought. Elizabeth put on a playful look. “Oh, what would make you say that?” Elizabeth said with an innocent look. “I don’t know, something just seems different.” Josh replied frowning. “Oh no, I haven’t changed at all. I just thought that with such a response, I should be equal in such a reply.” Elizabeth said finally, with a smile. With this, she strode off all grins, she was starting to feel like she was on Pride and Prejudice with all these subtle words. Josh just stared, and felt his face heat up. The problem was, that he was really starting to like Elizabeth Wakefield, not because of her hostility. She just seemed really smart. Smarter than any of the girls he had ever dated. Tia Ramirez was sitting behind Jessica Wakefield in homeroom, as Jessica talked to Tom McKay, who had recently transferred to SVH. She looked rather curious, as she was asking questions. “So, Tom, how are you today, that top you’re wearing, is positively luscious, who are you hoping to impress.” Jessica said, with a tone, Tia had never heard. And she also knew that Jessica was seeking gossip, which Tia would have loved to have joined in with, but not like that. Jessica turned her chair around and smiled at Tia, her face was warm with smiles, and Tia could see that Jessica was only joking around with Tom. Tia even had a crush on Tom, but had heard through the grapevine, that he liked Melissa Fox. She was surprised that Jessica wasn’t trying to turn him against her, and tell her of all the things that happened at the beginning of the year. Maybe she just wants to forget it, thought Tia, thinking that maybe Jessica was a little bit insecure, and was trying hard not to be pulled down again. Jessica Wakefield felt a tinge of sadness when she thought of Melissa, and how her friends had ditched her. She hoped that maybe someone would make her happy, but how could it be Tom? He was meant to be gay right? Also Tia, was acting weird at times. I wonder what’s up with her. Maybe I should talk to her, Jessica thought with a slight frown. Jessica knew that she was acting slightly different, but it felt great to finally not be gossiped about in a bad way. It felt very relieving, and she was very grateful to Tia for sticking by and being a friend. And just hoped that they could stay that way. She liked things just the way they were. With a sister talking to her, and a lovely boyfriend, nothing had been better in Jessica’s life, and she wanted for anything to hold on to that feeling. Melissa Fox hadn’t seen much of anyone all day, it was now lunch time, and she had decided to grace the library with her presence. She sighed, as she flipped open through book after book, pretending like she was really intrigued. Just then, she spotted Tom McKay walk through the doors, as though he was looking for someone. I wonder who he wants to see? Melissa thought rather intrigued. After all, he was about the only one in SVH that hadn’t disgraced her. Oh, he must be looking for Jessica Wakefield or someone like that, Melissa thought in a huff, as she returned her attention to the book she was supposed to be pretending to read. Tom spotted her, and sat next to her and smiled. “Hey Melissa, it’s good to see you. I was starting to think you had dropped off the planet.” He said as a joke. Melissa just stared. “Yeah, well maybe next time I might.” She said as part-joke and part something else. Tom watched her closely. What did Tia mean, when she said something about more to meeting Melissa’s eye. Who knew. “So, anyway, it’s good to see you.” Tom hedged, wondering if she might reply in some way. Melissa looked up at him. “Why are you even talking to me?” she asked and continued. “My life’s a mess right now.” Tom watched her. “Well, I don’t know what it is, but you have me intrigued.” He said, not wanting to go into too much detail. Melissa then smiled wryly. “It probably won’t last.” She muttered. The bell rang, and Tom stood up. “I guess I’ll see you later.” He said with a hopeful look. “Maybe.” Melissa said, just hoping that maybe he meant it, and gave him a small smile, just before he headed off to class. Melissa stood just for a moment before exiting the library, thinking that maybe there was one nice person in the world. All she needed was one, only one. Journal Entries Melissa Fox I feel tingly all over. I haven’t felt that, since, since Will. Oh why did Will have to dump me. Well as soon as he sees me moving on, he can wish all he wants. Tom is mine, I am going to have him. I have a new-found confidence I thought was fading. Tom McKay There is something behind Melissa Fox’s cool exterior, and not just her friends dissing her like that. But when I made the joke of falling off the planet, there was more that met the eye. I wonder what it is. Jessica Wakefield Tia is ignoring me, what did I do exactly, it’s not like I could help that Lila and Amy sat with us at lunch time, I mean they are cheerleaders. But don’t think I let them off the hook. They need to pay, big time. |
